Whole Wheat Cheesy Pretzel Recipe

Ingredients:
- l 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
- 1 tablespoon yeast.
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 2 tablespoons margarine
- 1/2 cup shredded Cheddar cheese
- 2/3 cup warm milk
- 1 teaspoon basil
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 egg, beaten
- l 1/2 teaspoons coarse salt
Directions:
- Combine first flour, yeast, salt and sugar in a medium bowl.
- Cut in margarine with a pastry blender or two knives until mixture resembles coarse meal (like biscuits).
- Add cheese, warm milk, basil and garlic powder stirring until dry ingredients are just moistened. Cover and allow to sit for about 10 minutes.
- Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead about 12 times.
- Divide dough in half and with a rolling pin roll each half into a rectangle. Cut dough lengthwise into eight 1-inch strips. Twist each into a pretzel shape.
- brush with beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse salt.
- Place on lightly greased baking sheets.
- Bake at 400° for 15 minutes or until golden brown. Cool and serve warm.
Makes about 16 servings.
