Ingredients:

  • l 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 tablespoon yeast.
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 2 tablespoons margarine
  • 1/2 cup shredded Cheddar cheese
  • 2/3 cup warm milk
  • 1 teaspoon basil
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • l 1/2 teaspoons coarse salt

Directions:

  1. Combine first flour, yeast, salt and sugar in a medium bowl.
  2. Cut in margarine with a pastry blender or two knives until mixture resembles coarse meal (like biscuits).
  3. Add cheese, warm milk, basil and garlic powder stirring until dry ingredients are just moistened. Cover and allow to sit for about 10 minutes.
  4. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead about 12 times.
  5. Divide dough in half and with a rolling pin roll each half into a rectangle. Cut dough lengthwise into eight 1-inch strips. Twist each into a pretzel shape.
  6. brush with beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse salt.
  7. Place on lightly greased baking sheets.
  8. Bake at 400° for 15 minutes or until golden brown. Cool and serve warm.

Makes about 16 servings.
